Marvel Goes to Disney World

Thursday night around 10 pm I got a call from Kelly Doe at The New York Times. Kelly's been wonderful to me from the beginning. we've worked on a lot of projects together while she was at The Washington Post and for other international newspapers she's art directed over the years. She told me they were starting a new section of the Week in Review that's an artist's take on an event of the week and wanted to see if I could work up something on Disney's purchase of Marvel comics. Since it was the first installment of this new section, called "Considered", they were trying to figure it out. The image would have a short caption running with it. And she needed it the next day, by 6pm.

I started sketching out ideas, some thoughts on the company logos, Mickey, etc. I was never a big comics fan so I had to do some research on Marvel, the characters, and so on. I threw in a rough sketch idea at the end of some Marvel characters at Disney, similar to an image I did for the Icon poster last year. I was actually hoping they wouldn't like it because it's a lot of work to pull off such a detailed image in a short time. Well, that's the one they liked of course, seems like that's always the case. They felt it told more of a narrative which is the feel they want for this particular section.

I worked on a few sketch variations Friday afternoon and got the go ahead around 3 or 4pm. Got the finish deadline extended to 10pm and finished on time. Ah, newspapers! The column is online here.

ARTS 246 PORTFOLIO REVIEW Q&A

Hey class,

Graphic Design seniors Chaz, Stephen, and Sam will be in class tomorrow (McMaster 323) to answer your questions about portfolio review, give advice, and give a demonstration on how to cut pockets for your portfolio.

DO NOT MISS THIS CLASS. They will be there from 1:15 to 2:30 and from 2:30-3:30. You might also consider bringing in your portfolio review posters and getting feedback from these guys. Remember, they are volunteering their time to do this so be professional, respectful, and thank them for their service.

If you do not plan to take the portfolio review then Wednesday's class is a work day for you.. so WORK!

Final crit is still scheduled for next Monday, with the project being due 1 week from tomorrow. This Friday will be an optional meeting class in Gambrell for either class from 12:20 until I have met with everyone. I am also available for individual meetings Thursday and Friday from 9:30-12:30. Email me to reserve a time.

Thanks-
Professor Valdes
